While previous research on women`s electoral performance in Taiwan focuses on legislative and mayoral elections, few studies examine the variations in women`s electoral performance in village chief elections. This study focuses on 1,051 village-level districts characterized by a "one male versus one female" contest out of a total of 7,748 districts nationwide during the 2022 Taiwan local elections. Employing both quantitative and qualitative approaches, this study analyzes individual-level and district-level factors that influence the electoral success of female candidates. The empirical analysis demonstrates that incumbent female candidates tend to exhibit better electoral performance. Furthermore, our findings indicate that female candidates who are younger than their male counterparts tend to perform better in elections. At the district level, female candidates are more likely to perform well in districts represented by at least one female city councilor. Overall, this thesis makes a contribution to the literature on women`s political participation in Taiwan by providing a systematic analysis and offering policy implications aimed at promoting gender equality and enhancing women`s participation in politics.
