As the care of the elderly has gradually become an issue that society cannot ignore, designing a robot that can assist the elderly to live independently has become one of the feasible solutions. Establishing a reciprocal mechanism between humans and robots is vital to promote the elderly’s acceptability of the robots. This study demonstrated an experiment to understand the possibility of establishing a reciprocal relationship between the robot and the elderly. The findings not only confirmed the establishment of a reciprocal relationship between humans and robots but also showed that the elderly’s reciprocity behaviors toward robots changed across task contexts. However, no significant relationship was found between the elderly’s degree of reciprocity and their level of acceptance of robots. Interview results elucidated that other factors influenced the elderly’s acceptance of robots. The experiment results were wished to bring a new vision to the field of reciprocity in HRI and explore the considerations underlying the helping behaviors among different health dimensions task contexts in the elderly. The findings would provide some recommendations for designing and using elderly care robots.
