This thesis investigates Ralph Waldo Emerson’s philosophy of solitude, self-reliance, and the interdependence between individuals and society. By analyzing his essays, “Self-Reliance” (1841) and “Society and Solitude” (1870), I explore how his view of the complex relationship between solitude and society changed over the course of his career. This thesis incorporates Emerson’s other significant concepts as well, including individualism, self-culture, and social improvement. The primary objective of this thesis is to provide a perspective that Emerson’s philosophy of solitude can serve as a source of spiritual therapy to alleviate individuals’ psychological difficulties arising from social isolation. To achieve this goal, I contextualize my topic within the history of Emerson studies. Chapter One provides a general outline of this thesis and a literature review. Chapter Two analyzes “Self-Reliance” and the importance of solitude as a fundamental condition for spiritual enlightenment. Chapter Three explores how Emerson adapted this individualistic view in “Society and Solitude” with an emphasis on balancing individualism and secularity. Chapter Four concludes by reflecting on the contemporary relevance of Emerson’s view of solitude and the interconnectedness between individuals and society. Far from being outdated, Emerson’s view can indeed serve as a form of therapy that resonates with the needs of twenty-first-century readers. |
