Based on the narrative analysis of the media reports of the ”foreign brides” phenomenon, this paper argues that ”social problem” is a product of ”interpretative work” accomplished by various effective narrative strategies. By overlapping media coverage, collaboration with governmental agencies, fabricated statistics and equivocal wording, the Taiwanese media construct the ”foreign brides” phenomenon as a social problem. The brides are portrayed either as passive victims or materialist blood-suckers, and prone to committing crimes, while the bridegrooms are portrayed as the ”socially undesirable,” that is, physically or mentally disabled, and deceivers and sexists. In addition to the content analysis of the media reports, my personal interaction with media workers in the course of doing action research, helps deepen the analysis into the dynamic process of media construction, revealing the power struggles over reality construction. It shows that media is a news filter and the process of making the news is the process of silencing. It hence suggests that social construction of reality is a power struggle rather than democratic interpretive work.
