This study investigates the degree of input misallocation prevalent in the DRAM industry. Based on the severe input misallocation problems observed in the Taiwanese DRAM industry, the study proceeds with dynamic market structure adjustments to fix the computed input distortions. Splitting the timeline following the Qimonda insolvency in 2009, two scenarios featuring the exit of a firm and team-up mergers of incumbents exhibit divergent changes in equilibrium misallocations. The results show that an exit event pushes up efficient frontiers to tamp down overall industry-wide misallocation, while merger scenarios bring about significant improvement in input distortions featured by higher production efficiency.
