This research investigates the fear in the Thai political context in the post-mortem of King Rama IX or King Bhumibol and explains the phenomena which caused the political conflict. The leading questions in the dissertation include how fear has been created and ingrained in Thai politics, how the ruling class manipulates fear by using the state mechanism to secure their status quo, and how fear has been maintained in Thai society through the ruling class network. It focuses on three stages for making fear, the theatre state of political fear, presented in Thai political society: 1) Creation of Fear, 2) Fear Transfer, and 3) Maintaining Fear from the elite.

Therefore, the finding suggests that the monarchy, military-back politicians, and businesspeople or the tripartite of network monarchy have been coordinating to secure the status quo by dramatizing fear through Lèse-majesté law or section 112 against state dissidents. Since the current King Vajiralongkorn lacks barami or political charisma, it has alerted the elite’s attention to losing its status quo. The network monarchy has to dramatize fear through three stages of theatre state of political fear. The dramatization relates to the threat of defamation law enforcement discursive of section 112. The finding also discusses the relationship between tripartite.

Considering, it frames the elite ideology in the concept of a theatre state of political fear. For the methodological device, the critical discourse analysis (CDA) enables a comprehensive understanding of the fear in Thai politics. CDA method is utilized to answer the political phenomenon differently before the King’s message on Lèse-majesté law. The dissertation conducted interviews with political exiles, the Lèse-majesté convicts, and the victim of the law enforcement officer.
