The theme of this thesis has been that maps and their associated iconography convey perceptions of the portrayals of Europe before and during 16th century. Sixteenth century saw a number of fundamental shifts in the representation of Europe. New discoveries of new sea route and new continents, provided an enhanced empirical accuracy for maps of Europe and the world.
The new mathematical techniques spawned world map projections which altered forever Europeans’ view of their world by placing their continent in a central and dominant position on the map of the world. In this thesis we have seen how a potent cocktail of cartography and iconography could alter fundamentally the attitudes of Europeans to their own continent and its place in the world.
