In this paper, we investigate how birth spacing affects children`s educational achievement by using PSFD from 1999 to 2018. We convert the panel data to the structure of sibling pairs and estimate the effect of birth spacing on educational achievement of older and younger siblings. Furthermore, we use multiple birth as an instrument to account for the endogeneity of birth spacing. Through 2SLS, the empirical results indicate that birth spacing has a positive impact on the educational achievement of older siblings. A one-year increase in age difference increases the proportion of children who can obtain a college degree by 3.7% on average, and the spacing has no significant effect on younger siblings. Further by distinguishing the birth years of the samples, we find that the effects of birth spacing have opposite directions in different generations, which reflects that the channels for the effect of birth spacing are quite different in early society and modern times.
