Abstract: For the world, the hospitality industry was one of the most stable due to the constant flow of tourists year after year. Then, in early 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic affected us in unimaginable ways, with months-long lockdowns in almost every part of the globe, paralyzing cities, and even entire countries. Two years later, the impact is still fresh and evident, and the hospitality industry is still reeling from the aftershocks of this global disaster. Yet, with the advent of vaccines, and governments attempting to return societies to normal conditions, a slow but sure opening of world economies has commenced and has shown promising signs of returning even stronger.
Amapala is a small island at the south coast of Honduras. It is a popular tourist destination, but not to the great scale found at the northern coasts of the country. It is largely unexplored, and locals have not been able to fully exploit the potential their island has to entice visitors and foster tourism. There are not many options for accommodation in the island, and those that exist are mostly of fair quality, unreliable, and unkept. This produces unhappy travelers and, what’s worse, less desire to return or recommend the destination to others. This is how Carmenta Hostel is born.
Carmenta Hostel aims to be a high-quality service hostel, with friendly and educated staff, providing comfortable and value-priced accommodation for budget travelers and holidaymakers alike. It will have a mixture of classic and modern elements but will mostly rely on the concept of “placemaking”: community-driven activities and involvement to generate an interest in the tourist, providing a complete and fulfilling experience, all whilst revitalizing the town.
In conclusion, the vision for Carmenta Hostel is to provide a space to prove that change led by the community is transformative, adaptable, and successful, where prosperity is not for only one person, but for everyone living there.
