Since the highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) came into the world, it opened a new life for people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA). By taking the medication, the virus can be suppressed to a certain amount that will not lead to AIDS, which means people who got infected by HIV have become a chronic condition. Under this circumstance, more and more PLWHA reach middle or older age, constructing their life meaning and developing coping strategies in terms of coexisting with the virus. The purpose of this thesis is to capture the experience of PLWHA when coexist with HIV, and depict their recovery course, mainly focus on PLWHA born in the 1970s with the self-identity as gay men.

This research is a qualitative research which 7 in-depth interviews were completed with PLWHA who self-identified as gay men and born in the 1970s. Thematic analysis method was carried out to identify the themes of their life experience. The results are divided into 3 parts, the first part is the HIV-related events the interviewees encountered, including themes such as the attitude toward medication, friendship and the influence of the social context. The second part is the coping strategies they developed and the meaning in terms of HIV-related experience they construct, including themes such as HIV status revealing and the pill-taking strategies. The third part is the recovery course they experienced, including some issues such as the impact of social stigma, and the important role that the community plays. Lastly, this thesis gives some suggestions to the future researchers and the PLWHA.
