Based on the development of the National Chengchi University (NCCU) Rugby Team, this article argues that the critical determinant of running a college rugby team is the social ties and solidarity developing among the ex-teammates. Comparing to the male students dominating school, such as National Taiwan University and National Cheng Kung University, NCCU has long been suffering for the shortage of players especially the declining fertility rate in the past twenty years. However, this team has participated in the College Cup without interruption when other schools stopped participating one or more times. Using the data of gender ration in three schools and the oral history of NCCU Rugby Team, I demonstrate how the social ties and brotherhood of our team in sustaining the existence of this team.
