Zhu Sheng is a knowledgeable Yi philosopher in early Ming Dynasty, authoring numerous books. However, scholars who study Zhu have focused mostly on his political achievements and barely explored his works in Jingxue. In his books on Yi, Zhu takes the form of "side notes", offering explanations of his main texts right next to the texts. This unique form of layout makes not only reading but also the preservation and circulation of his books difficult. While Yao Wenwei thinks highly of Zhu`s new approach, most researchers do not appreciate this innovative form of side notes. Yet, closer examination reveals that Zhu`s interpretation of gua-yao are based on meanings of Xiang-shu, worthy of further exploration and investigation. With the focus on Zhu`s complex and rich Xiang-shu theory, the present study aims to comb through and delve into his ideas about gua-bian, gua-zhu, hu-ti, gua-shu and gua-wei, objectively establish the characteristics and important contents of his theory, and give an indication of his role in Yixue in the early Ming Dynasty, in case Zhu and his works should be consigned to oblivion.
