While global competition continues to intensify and rapid technological advances, enterprises face fierce competition and challenges. Therefore, it is crucial to learn how firms can survive and create innovation under such circumstances. Firms are encouraged to continue developing innovative activities which can provide superior products or services to create competitiveness. To conduct innovative activities, firms may seek external resources to reach out for the knowledge they cannot develop independently. However, working with various alliances, firms may face risk and instability. Absorptive capacity is the ability of firms to acquire, absorb, and transform external knowledge, which can help firms work with external partners smoothly. Therefore, this study tends to discover the importance of the firm`s absorptive capacity for improving its innovativeness and expect to understand how firms can obtain resources it lacks and integrated the resources into the internal system. The research identifies absorptive capacity into two separate concepts, potential absorptive capacity and realized absorptive capacity. This research focused on discovering how potential absorptive capacity and realized absorptive capacity affect the relationship between diversified alliances and firm innovativeness. The study adopts quantitive methods based on the Third Industrial Innovation Survey in Taiwan Area (TIS 3) collected by the National Science Council.

The analysis suggests that (1) the degree of alliance diversity will positively affect the firm`s innovation performance; (2) potential absorptive capacity partially mediates the relationship between alliance diversity and firm innovativeness; (3) realized absorptive capacity plays a partially mediates role in the relationship between alliance diversity and firm innovativeness; (4) there is no correlation between potential absorptive capacity and realized absorptive capacity.
