In this increasingly competitive business environment, startups can seldom operate the company alone, but often operate through strategic alliances to obtain external assistance. The research regarding how startups obtain outstanding innovation performance to strengthen their competitive advantages and differentiate themselves from other competitors through strategic alliances, despite the lack of human resources, capital, and etcetera, has been widely discussed nowadays.
This study investigates the impact of startups alliance partners, alliances diversity, alliances sequence, and alliances experience on innovation performance.
This study has the following four conclusions:
    1. Startups who cooperate with competitors have poor innovation performance.
    2. If startups want to cooperate with competitors, they should conduct simultaneous multiple alliances in order to have better innovation performance.
    3. Previous alliances experience can positively help innovation performance of startups.
    4. Even if startups had alliance experience before, they should not conduct simultaneous multiple alliances as it tends to lead to poor innovation performance.
