Building Information Model (BIM) is an innovative technology, which can improve the workflow and efficiency of the entire department, in the field of modern architecture. Through information sharing and visualization, communication between partners in the construction industry can be accelerated. Moreover, the decision-making and integration of various companies in the construction supply chain can be improved. The development of BIM technology has created competitive pressure on architectural design and construction companies, hence, the demand for the introduction and application of this technology is increasing. Although researchers and practitioners agree that BIM has several potential benefits, its adoption rate in the construction industry is still low, resulting in the current building life cycle unable to achieve the benefits of BIM technology. Therefore, to successfully adopt BIM in construction companies, it is important to understand the factors that affect the introduction of BIM. However, the acceptance and introduction of BIM is not determined by approval or rejection from managers, instead, many factors affect that.
This study adopts the Technology, Organization and Environment (TOE) model to explore the factors that influence the willingness of Taiwanese construction companies to introduce BIM. By using survey method, 436 valid questionnaires were collected from the members of the Commercial Real Estate Development Association of New Taipei City, Hsinchu City, and Hsinchu County. Subsequently, a multiple hierarchical regression analysis was performed to verify the proposed research model. The results indicate that several variables significantly affect the willingness of introducing BIM in construction industry, which are relative advantages, compatibility, complexity, and perceived usefulness in technology dimension; top management support, IT infrastructure in organization dimension; and external force, government regulation in environment dimension. Nevertheless, technology cost and organizational readiness do not have a significant impact. This study provides factors for the successful introduction of BIM technology in the construction industry for the academic and practical fields. In addition, by understanding of the influencing factors that affect the adoption of BIM technology, construction personnel and the government can develop relevant policies to promote BIM technology in Taiwan. Moreover, the performance of construction companies and the technology integration of the overall construction industry can be improved. It is hoped that this research can provide important implications for practitioners and different research directions for the academic community.
