Through the study of academic papers and Japanese history textbooks, this paper delineates the process of constructing the discourses on Meiji Restoration in post-war Taiwan. With the introduction and trend of formation study into the Chinese nation-state during post-war Taiwan and together with the implementation of the policy of Sinicization by the Chinese Nationalist Party, the discourses on Meiji Restoration in post-war Taiwan had consequently been focusing on comparing the reform efforts between Japan and the Qing state and on Sino-Japanese cultural exchange, which showed that there is a direct link between Meiji Restoration and foreign aggression. In comparison, during the tides of rising democratization and “Taiwanization” in Taiwan from the late 1970s, a discourse on Meiji Restoration originated from the studies of Japan emerged. It treated the problems embedded in Meiji Restoration as the lesson for contemporary Taiwan, creating a mirror for a Taiwan-centred constitutional democracy and nation-state. Meanwhile, some scholars discussed Meiji Restoration in the context of Taiwan history of the Japanese colonial period. Therefore, the discourses on Meiji Restoration in post-war Taiwan were a result of the complicated interplay between the tides of Sinicization, democratization and “Taiwanization.”
