According to what the tradition of Japanese literature research has revealed, the four seasons represented in Japanese culture was structurally created through classical texts, not the pre-cultural natural phenomenon itself. In other words, the nature and the four seasons did not exist apart from the world of poetry, and they existed exactly as texts. Such a viewpoint is the same with the medieval Zen poetics, and the four seasons was symbolized by the creation and the destruction of all beings in the ontological dimension. This paper examines how the four seasons were established in the symbolic dimension through the text of Chugan-Engetsu (1300-1375) and "Hyaku-No-Ou" (An annotated edition of "I Ching") by Togen-Zuisen (1430-1489), and clarifies what kind of theoretical foundation formed the viewpoint that associate the four seasons with human morality.
