Social Education, National Taiwan Normal University, the formal education of library science in Taiwan has presently developed into an integrated educational system in the undergraduate, MA, and PhD studies as well as multiple study programs for in-service training. At present, there are six departments, eight MA programs, and one PhD program in ten universities focusing on the study of library science. The development of library education in Taiwan could be roughly divided into three phases: the phase of growth (1954-1979), the phase of development (1980-1992), and the phase of transformation and advancement (from 1993 until the present time). An integrated analysis will be given, covering the social, technological, economic, political, and educational aspects, to organize and reveal nine factors that influence the development of library education in Taiwan. The analysis may serve to explicate the essence and characteristics of library education in Taiwan. Through the analysis, this study expects to outline the past historical development and influence, which may provide direction and reference for the future development of library education.
