As a sub-field of Human Communication, the study of organizational communication has undergone significant changes during the past few decades in the United States. While scholars in various disciplines have studied communication in organizations for many years, the development of organization communication as an identifiable field with its own theories and methodology is relatively recent occurrence. Several perspectives on the study of organizational communication have also developed. Regardless of the development and trends in scholarly activities, this field is relatively new in Taiwan. This paper attempts to provide the reader with a sound foundation of concepts for understanding and discussing the field of study. The primary goal for this article is to complete the map of the development of organizational communication as a filed of study by introducing its origin, relationship to other fields, and various perspectives on the study of it. Having considered the origin and the development of this field, this article than offers an assessment of the field’s present status in Taiwan. By doing so, the paper explores the general academic acceptance of the field. Although as evidenced by an increase in published article, textbooks, and academic programs, the field of organizational communication still faces some growing pains. Particularly, scholars have found it difficult to establish an identity for the field in Taiwan. Finally, based on the previous discussions, this paper signifies several implications for advancing the study of organizational communication in Taiwan. It is clear that the emergence of the field here is different form the United States. Therefore, scholars here may need to employ different approaches to define and refine the study of organizational communication.
