    Abstract: 線上公用目錄自1970年代正式發展以來，以所運用的技術特徵約可區分為三代。每一代目錄之間都強調介面的改進，而易於使用及立即學習則是未來的發展重點。本文由各代線上公用目錄所運用的檢索技術切入，兼論它所採行的架構及所引發的檢索困擾，也嘗試引介新的技術層面，並反思目前眾多的網路服務站對線上公用目錄所可能帶來的衝擊，至於未來的線上公用目錄應有什麼樣的面貌、館員能否扮演引領不斷精進的角色則有待全體共同努力。
