Contemporary studies of Chinese democracy are epistemologically hegemonic in that they close off the possibility of reinterpreting the meaning of democracy. The discussion of this paper moves beyond democracy in institutional, value, and personality terms. Instead, it explores the possibility of seeing democracy as an epistemological tool of opening cultural hegemonies. The practice of epistemological democracy depends on the reading and re-reading of on-going practices in people’s life experiences. Democracy is preserved to the extent that scholars are always able to read into practices meanings that are outside of any existent or emerging hegemonies. From this perspective, this paper is also a critique of writings by both liberals and new leftists in the current cultural debates.
