This article creates the term “ethnic techno-nationalism” to characterize Malaysia’s national development and discusses the predicament the country faces in an era of globalization. The article is divided into four parts. The first introduces the concept of “ethnic techno-nationalism.” The second part elaborates on the use of the term for analyzing Malaysia’s national development. The third discusses the development of “ethnic techno-nationalism” is not sufficient for Malaysia to tackle the challenge brought by globalization. If Malaysia fails to establish equality and trust among different ethnic groups, its national development will remain limited. The main point of this article is to put forward the proposition that “any country reducing itself into some sort of national, ethnic, religious or cultural hegemony will have difficulty to cope with the challenge brought by globalization.”
