The present study focuses on the museum`s educational function, taking technology applications as a starting point for exploring museum education development strategies. The study takes the form of qualitative research using the case study approach, utilizing the purposive sampling method; the sample was selected from among the directors (i.e. the senior decision-makers) of science and technology related museums in Taiwan that are supervised by Taiwan`s Museum of Education, and from among museum managers at these museums who are responsible for planning (i.e. participants in the decision-making process). Semi-structured interviews were conducted with the members of the sample. The researcher used the constant comparison method, supplemented by the use of computer-assisted qualitative data analysis software (CAQDAS), to undertake analysis. The results obtained in the study are summarized below:
1.Development strategies for museum education should make use of technology to develop a better understanding of the needs of the targets of the education, thereby making it possible to provide comprehensive, customized educational services.
2.Museum education development strategies should aim to make the education content lively and easy-to-understand, with an emphasis on interactive participation and on integrating the educational activities with online communities.
3.Museum education should be founded on rich, in-depth thematic curricula that integrate the museum`s technological facilities and resources to build a first-class lifelong learning environment.
4.The role played by museum education should emphasize the museum`s potential for serving as a medium for education.
The research results outlined above have the following implications for practical museum work: Taiwan`s museums have for many years now been positioned as lifelong learning ("social education") institutions, with an educational role and mission. In today`s era of rapid technological change, when the volume of knowledge is growing exponentially and information is constantly changing, young people have got used to accessing information using the Internet, mobile phones and tablet PCs. Museums need to think how they can adapt to this situation and change their strategies for providing educational services accordingly, in order to attract the younger generation into museums so that they can experience museum learning, and enjoy doing so. At the same time, while technology applications may represent a useful strategy for developing museum education, museums should not be emphasizing "technology for technology`s sake." The process of utilizing technology needs to be based on a real educational purpose. Provided that technology is used appropriately, it can help museums to play a more diversified range of educational roles in the future.
