Elections for the 8th European Parliament were held in the 28 Member States of the European Union from 22 to 25 May 2014. 751 new MEPs began their five-year terms starting 1 July 2014. In addition to the traditional power to approve the EU budget and nominations for the top posts of the European Commission President and Commissioners, the Lisbon Treaty, which came into effect on 1 December 2009, gave more competence to the European Parliament in the EU’s legislative and decision-making processes. With reference to the European Commission, the UK and Taiwan, this paper examines the meaning and implications of the 2014 European Parliament Election on the EU, Member States and third countries. It also proposes some suggestions to trace of the future of the EU and to enhance EU-Taiwan relations.
