From early time, the constellation of the Northern Dipper (Beidou) has occupied a major place in Chinese astrology and religious belief. The Beidou stars, which were considered as universal regulators of cosmic events and the governors of human destiny, were particularly important in Daoist traditions. It is found in a calendar dating to the year 924 produced by the a renowned official of the Dunhuang local administration, Zhai Fengda 翟奉達 (883-961?). The rite is entitled Ge Xiangong li beidou fa (Method of Sir Ge for Honoring the Northern Dipper). The cult is related to the cult of the Original Spirit of Personal Destiny (benming 本命). During Song and Yuan dynasties, Daoist adepts and Ritual Master elaborated numerous rituals placed under the governance of the Northern Dipper. Among the most important techniques of Ritual practices were Announcing to Dipper 告斗法advocated by Yuan Daoism. This project also explores the Dipper Ritual manuscripts during late imperial period. Several versions of this “Dipper Ritual” have been preserved in the Daofa haihan Canon. They provide conspicuous descriptive representations of the local tradition divinities of the Northern Dipper.
