By adopting the theoretical framework of postmodern feminist science fiction discourses on the relationship between science and feminist science fiction, this study aims to examine seventeenth-century woman writer Margaret Cavendish’s participation in contemporary scientific debates on body-soul relationship, and to investigate how these scientific debates are reflected in Cavendish’s descriptions of soul-out-of-body travel in her science fictional work The Blazing World (1666). Although scholars have reclaimed Cavendish’s position as an important scientist and natural philosopher during the scientific revolution in the seventeenth century, and confirmed her contribution to contemporary studies of science and natural philosophy, very few scholars appropriate these scientific discourses to analyze the science fictional elements in Cavendish’s The Blazing World. By surveying Cavendish’s participation and contribution to contemporary scientific and natural philosophical debates on body-soul relationship, this study attempts to interpret the characters’ soul-out-of-body travel across different spaces and worlds in the text. Through combining interdisciplinary research methods from humanities and sciences, I intend to reestablish Cavendish’s The Blazing World as a forerunner of feminist science fiction, which was published more than one and a half century before Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein (1818).With this study, I also hope to demonstrate how early modern women science fiction writers appropriate scientific discourse in their literary creations, and to further provide new possibilities and research directions for the development of travel through time and/or space in science fiction.
