In the Tokugawa shogunate of Japan, the influence of Chinese books on the establishment of an ethic paragon for Edo people can be seen from the first shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu (1543-1616), who revered Confucianism, the fifth shogun Tokugawa Tsunayoshi (1646-1709), who implanted the concepts of loyalty and filial piety in the daily ethics of the masses, and the eighth shogun Tokugawa Yoshimune (1684-1751), who implemented mass education. Beside Confucian classical texts, Chinese narrative encyclopedias, whose content was easy to understand, were also more popular among Edo people. This research will study the encyclopedia Quan cheng gushi edited by Wang Ting-na during the Wanli period of the Ming Dynasty (1572-1620) to discuss three main topics as follows: 1. Try to understand the characteristics of Quan cheng gushi and its relationship with the morality books through the comparison between Quan cheng gushi and Ren jing yang qiu both edited by Wang Ting-na. 2. Analyze the publication of Quan cheng gushi in Edo Japan by discussing the influence of the Chinese morality books on the ideology in the Edo period. 3. Quan cheng gushi was not only used as a book of ethical instruction in the Edo period, but also as a Korean language textbook, namely Zen-ich-do-jin edited by Hoshu Amenomori (Quan cheng gushi). Therefore, lastly, based on Zen-ich-do-jin this research will analyze the criteria, which Hoshu Amenomori used in cultivating literacy of diplomats in Sinology, to link it to the emphasized integrity in diplomacy in order to understand the intentions and background in choosing this book, as well as the expectations in the diplomatic relations between Japan and Korea.
