How does Chen Dawei`s poetry rewrite history? What different feature of history as a symbolic Other is shown in his writing? This essay attempts to examine the characteristic of the lyrical subject in Chen`s poetry based on Lacan`s theory of the symbolic and the Other, as well as the dialectics of lack and jouissance. The deconstructive strategy commonly attributed to Chen Dawei`s poetics can be inspected closely from the perspective of Lacanian psychoanalytic theory. The symbolic Other in Chen`s poetry is to be recognized as the Other as Chinese tradition or even the cultural Other in general. Viewed from the context of reconstructing the historical symbolic since the twentieth century, Chen Dawei`s historical writing can be seen clearly as a rewriting of modernity.
