This critical essay is a study of Bai Hua`s long narrative poem Records of the Historian: 1950-1976 in light of Lacan`s theory of subjectivity and jouissance. I attempt to reveal how the narrator occupies the position of a historical subject, while at the same time emptying his own subjectivity. I also discuss the poem`s expression of jouissance in the revolutionary discourse, and examine the traumatic jouissance in the grand name of modernity, as well as the constant shifts, escapes and disseminations of such jouissance in the web of everyday language.
