The bi-si 弜巳 in Huadong 花東 inscriptions were found on the 13^(th), the 34^(th), the 324^(th), the 391^(st), the 446^(th) and the 449^(th) block of Huadong, and there have been slight different interpretations and punctuations among the four main exegeses. The four main exegeses are: (1) "Yinxu Huayuanzhuang Dongdi Jiagu" 殷墟花園莊東地甲骨, briefly as "Huadong", edited by the Institute of Archeology, Chinese Academy of Social Science; (2) "Yinxu Huayuanzhuang Dongdi Jiagu Jaoshi"殷墟花園莊東地甲骨by Zhu Qixiang; (3) "Yinxu Huayuanzhuang Dongdi Jiagubuci de ChubuYanju" 殷墟花園莊東地甲骨卜辭的初步研究by Yao Xuen; (4) "Jiaguwen Jaoshi Zongji" 甲骨文校釋總集, volume 19, by Cao Jin Yen and Shen Jian Hua. Basically, scholars have achieved a common consensus regarding the translation of the negative adverb bi 弜 in oracle bone inscriptions, whereas the word Si 巳 are used mainly as si 祀 in nian-si 年祀 (year) and ji-si 祭祀 (sacrifices), place names and adverbs, etc. In this essay, among the six blocks mentioned, the si 巳 on the 34^(th) and the 391^(st) block of "Huadong" should stand for adverbs with negative meanings, the si 巳 on the 13^(th) and the 446^(th) block remain unsolved, and the si 巳 in the 324^(th) and the 449^(th) block should be si 祀 as in the ji-si 祭祀 (sacrifices). Besides, there are preliminary discussions about relative words in this thesis in order to fully understand the content of oracle bone inscriptions. Firsthand materials regarding the rites of Shang Dynasty are marked on the 34^(th), the 391^(st) and the 446^(th) block of Huadong , including the ceremonies and decorums such as cheng 爯, xian 見, and su □(速), which are all extremely valuable in the historical materials of Shang Dynasty. |
