摘要: The present paper discusses the contents and methods of Psycholinguistics--a sub-field of linguistics that has arisen out of the collaboration between psychology and linguistics proper (theoretical linguistics). There are two distinct differences between linguistics proper and psycholinguistics. First,
linguistics focuses on the analysis of language products (the products of performance), but psycholinguistics aims to explore the mechanisms underlying
understanding and production (and acquisition). Secondly, linguistics, though considered as a social science, is not much tuned to empirical methods, and
yet psycholinguistics relies very much on this approach. In order to make these two points clear, the present paper will cover four topics: (1) the definition and scope of psycholinguistics; (2) the relationships between the developments of psycholinguistics and linguistics; (3) the research methods in linguistics--a review and critique; (4) the methods of psycholinguistics-plusa few examples. It is hoped that such discussions will point to the conclusion that if the two fields can cooperate, the study of language will be more fruitful in the future.
