On the basis of monitoring framework of metacognition indicated by Favell (1976) and the previous studies of Wang (2001), Lin (2002, 2004), Cheng (1994, 2001, 2002), Ladino & Tovar (2005) and Maturano et al. (2006), the present study attempted to investigate the self-regulated learning of the Taiwanese college students in Spanish reading and the interrelationships among emotional reaction, goal setting, use of strategies and control of reading environment. Seventy-six students of Providence University completed a self-regulated learning survey assessing their emotional reaction, learning goals, action control and reading strategies involved in the reading process. Results suggest that high ability of self-regulation had positive impact on the use of reading strategies. Students who were motivated in reading Spanish as well as had clear and specific goals towards the reading achievement used effectively the reading strategies than the other students. Implications for teaching are discussed.
