This paper tries to emphasize the quotidian realities of religious and healing cultures in a particular ethnographic context. In order to understand therapeutic aspects of religion in both the traditional and contemporary contexts as well as its local and global manifestations, I will explore the religious healing in Tainan, where religious practices offer especially rich examples. I chose four cases study on Taiwan: Xilong dian, Guanxi gong, Xingxin tan and Heyi tang. Base on these ethnographic pieces, this paper also tries to explore theoretical understanding of the spirit, body and illness in traditional Chinese society. In addition, I will analyze the historical tradition of ritual magic and healing in Chinese esoteric tradition, followed by an exploration of Daoist magical arts and Buddhist Tantric rituals after Song dynasty. The analysis will focus on ritual healing and spirit possession healing. These historical sources and analysis not only provide vivid accounts of the role of spirit possession and ritual performance in healing individuals and communities in traditional Chinese society, but it also help us to understand on healing and spirit possession in Taiwan. The agency of ritual and medium of deities and spirits in accounting for and dealing with a range of psychological and physical trauma are also the main issue in this project.
